The petrochemicals divisions within Petromidia refinery supplies more than half the necessary of petrochemical products for internal consumption in Romania.
These industry branch has known a well deserved revival in recent years, a breath of air of the refining industry affected by the decline of oil prices.
What contributed massively to the development of this branch was good integration with the Petromidia refinery that supplies the entire quantity of polypropylene, investments in the modernization of installations and, most of all, the diversification of varieties to cover the latest applications.
The varieties of polyolefins (polypropylene and polyethylene) produced by the Petromidia refinery are used in agriculture, the food industry and for a wide range of products, from FMCG, personal care, electronics and electrotechnics to auto industry, textiles and constructions.
The petrochemical division has 3 installations: one installation of polypropylene (PP) and 2 for polyethylene, low density polyethylene (LDPE) and high density polyethylene (HDPE), with a combined output of over 220,000 tons/year.
The company operates the only marine terminal for offloading ethylene at the Black Sea and the only cryogenic tank with a storage capacity of 10,000 tons.
The petrochemicals division produces more than 30 special, niche varieties with added value.
Between 2005-2017, more than USD 100 million have been invested in the petrochemical division and today the results are visible: an increases in production from 20,000 tons of polymers in 2000 to 150,000 tons in 2016 and growing.
In H1 2019, the total polymers production for Petrochemicals area was 59.3 kt, lower by 27.4% as compared to the same periods of last year. The decrease of polymers production was mainly driven by operation in the polyethylene's units as result of the unfavorable market conditions.Read the H1 results press release.
The total production of polymers in the petrochemical segment was 92.2 kt, down 22.4% from the first 9 months of 2018. The decrease of the production of polymers was mainly determined by the low operating rate in the polyethylene installations, as a result of unfavorable market conditions.
The results of the petrochemical division continued to be affected by market pressure on margins, reaching the lowest level in the last decade in the first 9 months of 2019.Read the 9 months results press release.
Last year, the Petrochemical Division of the refinery obtained an increase of about 3% in processed raw materials (propylene, ethylene). Given the unfavourable context, the petrochemicals division reduced its processed ethylene by 6% - imported raw material required for low and high density polyethylene installations.
