The operational model integrates all operational activities specific to the downstream flow from acquisition of raw materials, supply chain, refining, to fuel products sale It brings a wider focus on the development of the business in order to provide improved benefits to our customers.
The reorganization of the Group operations into three business units targets greater flexibility and a better allocation of responsibilities, with significant impact on the overall results of the Group.

The petrochemicals divisions within Petromidia refinery supplies more than half the necessary of petrochemical products for internal consumption in Romania.

These industry branch has known a well deserved revival in recent years, a breath of air of the refining industry affected by the decline of oil prices.

What contributed massively to the development of this branch was good integration with the Petromidia refinery that supplies the entire quantity of polypropylene, investments in the modernization of installations and, most of all, the diversification of varieties to cover the latest applications.


 

The varieties of polyolefins (polypropylene and polyethylene) produced by the Petromidia refinery are used in agriculture, the food industry and for a wide range of products, from FMCG, personal care, electronics and electrotechnics to auto industry, textiles and constructions.

The petrochemical division has 3 installations: one installation of polypropylene (PP) and 2 for polyethylene, low density polyethylene (LDPE) and high density polyethylene (HDPE), with a combined output of over 220,000 tons/year.

The company operates the only marine terminal for offloading ethylene at the Black Sea and the only cryogenic tank with a storage capacity of 10,000 tons.

The petrochemicals division produces more than 30 special, niche varieties with added value. 

 

Raw material for medical equipment

Rompetrol petrochemical division has developed a special type of polypropylene dedicated to protective medical masks. It is used for the middle layer of the mask, the most important layer for filtering and protecting against pathogens.

The new type - RMB30H will be delivered in granules in bags of 25 kilograms and will be used in “meltblown” units - a conventional method of manufacturing micro and nanofibers.

Rompetrol produces and provides all the necessary types of products for obtaining type FPP1 and FPP2 sanitary and surgical masks and medical accessories. The RSB25 (industrial applications), RSB35H and RSB40H (medical and personal hygiene applications) types are dedicated to obtaining nonwoven material for the outer layers of the protective masks, and RMB30H to obtaining nonwoven material for the inner / filtering layer of the masks.

Results 1st semester 2020

In S1 2020, the petrochemical segment of the company processed a total of 48 kt of propylene, a level decreasing compared to S1 2019. However, the amount of processed ethylene registered, during the same mentioned period, a significant increase, reaching a total of 28 kt.

Results 2019

The Petrochemicals segment continued in 2019 to be affected by the pressure of the market margins, which last year reached the lowest levels in the last decade: 398 USD / t for polypropylene, 158 USD / t for low density polyethylene (LDPE), respectively 157 USD / t for high density polyethylene (HDPE).

Considering that the raw material for polyethylene installations is ensured from import (ethylene), and the evolution and fluctuation of the quotation for this raw material in 2019 was a high one, the company decided to keep the LDPE installation in operation at a low flow rate and at the conservation of the HDPE unit.
